With the explosion of free agency in the 1970s and 80s, “One Stupid Owner” became a phrase I began to hear more and more – especially when it came to emerging super-agent Scott Boras.
The “Michael Jordan” of sports agents knows how to create leverage and bidding wars like nobody’s business. And as outlandish as the contracts he secures appear to fans, he only ever needs one intellectually challenged owner to make the offer. For decades, he has done exactly that.
Backed by the strongest union in professional sports, Major League Baseball remains the only major sport without a salary cap. With the current collective bargaining agreement set to expire in December of 2026, the tension is peaking. My alter ego, Crazy Old Head (COH), was officially triggered by a story of a near-physical confrontation between Philadelphia Phillies All-Star Bryce Harper and MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred, where Harper allegedly got right in Manfred’s face over the mere mention of a salary cap.
COH was like, “Excuse me? We can’t even have the conversation?”
It was on. And the journey to produce the satirical music video One Stupid Owner began. Scott Boras wasn’t the origin of the unintended consequences of free agency (where the LA Dodgers now sit at a $395 million payroll and the Miami Marlins are at $77 million), but he certainly seemed like an accelerant. As such, I had a blast spoofing the world from the super-agent’s perspective. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen!
